Advanced Excerpt 4.1 released

This is a quick informative post about the recent update for the Advanced Excerpt plugin. The previous version caused quite a bit of trouble, so I promised to release another version soon. Well, here it is: 4.1

Most of the changes are concerned with making the code easier to manage. This is important because it allows me to find bugs faster or avoid them altogether. I’ve also written a bundle of automated tests that will check every change I make from now on. They are probably not complete yet, but it certainly makes me more confident that there will be no major bugs in future updates.

There were also some bugs that needed to be fixed. Most importantly the template function that ignored custom options. Obviously, I’ve also paid extra attention to avoid making my previous mistake again.

Furthermore, I decided to drop backward compatibility for PHP 4. This means that, officially speaking, the plugin only works on WP 3.2 and up (older versions allow the use of PHP 4). However, if you are using PHP 5 but (for some reason) still an older version of WordPress, the plugin might work just fine. Generally speaking, you should keep up with the latest version if possible.

Any questions can be posted here in the comments, or on the support forum. If you encounter bugs or errors, please post them to the support forum (not here).

Thanks everyone, for taking an interest in this plugin and giving feedback! Let’s hope this update goes off without a hitch.

I upgraded to WP 3.3 and the plugin doesn’t work anymore…The plugin is the latest..I used the function

This is what I’ve used all the time:

Plugin and WordPress are all the latest versions? What’s wrong?

Nice plugin! I wanted to know if it is possible to set the excerpt length for the plugin using the MORE tag in the post editor instead of limiting the text by character or word count?

Thank you.

I have a problem.
I use the tag in my articles and on the index.php (mainloop) the the_advanced_excerpt displayed correctly, but when I use a loop for a category, then this does not. Does anyone have a tip for me?
Main Loop> More attacks days
Loop other side> More days will be ignored and it will be reduced only after x characters

Hi. I’m using version 4.1.1. I’ve just found that if I allow manual excerpts (and I do want to allow these) then the [More...] tag doesn’t appear when an article has a manual excerpt.

Same here, but with adding the iFrame tag. When i save it, the added tag is gone and not active. To bad, its a pretty awesome and powerfull plugin. Hope you fix it soon :)

amazing plugin! have you thought about putting other features into this plugin like category or homepage/page exclusion?

I have. It would make the plugin more useful for people who do not have the ability to edit their theme directly.
So I will probably implement that feature in the future, but for now I want to focus on making the plugin stable and more usable for developers.

Also, apologies to the people who are having trouble with the current version. Please post any details about your problem to the support forum, because it gives me a much better overview of what has to be solved (and for some reason my blog removes code snippets).
